Shandi’s Birdie Bread
by skthurley
Birdie bread is a great nutritious way to get stubborn pet birds to eat healthy! Birds think they are getting a treat, while in fact they are getting a powerload of veggies and other healthy foods. Check it out! It’s very easy, quick and simple to make. And the best part, you can customize it to your bird’s tastes and each time it can be something different!
Enjoy baking for your birdies, and please feel free to post comments of how your fids enjoyed it!
1/2 cup whole wheat flour (or spelt flour, or any other grain flour, but not white)
1/2 cup quick oats/rolled oats
1/2 cup seed mix
1/4 quinoa
1/4 amaranth
1 to 2 cups of pureed/minced veggies ( I put LOTS of veggies in my bread)
1/2 cup of pellets ( can be crushed to powder or left whole. I typically do both)
1 tsp of Flax seed
1 tsp of Hemp seed
1 cup of organic baby food (sweet potato and/or butternut squash are the ones I used) OR 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce.
1 banana
1 egg (with shell – crushed into a powder)
Mix all together in any order you please. Doesn’t matter. Usually I mince all my veggies first, then add everything else.
I may add some water if it’s too dry. I have also added some unsweetened apple juice and orange juice instead of water. It should be medium wet – not liquidy but not too thick. Having too moist of dough isn’t going to ruin it. Use your own judgement.
I do NOT add oil or baking soda/powder of any kind. Oil is fattening for birds, and either baking soda or powder has aluminum in it and thus can be dangerous to birds, so I choose to not add any just to be safe. My breads ends up being a little flat, but my guys love it either way.
I always add lots of veggies. I want the bread to be as healthy as possible for them. There are some mornings where they get birdie bread instead of their veggie mash, and I like knowing they’re eating healthy foods, even though they think it’s a treat.
I have made this recipe several times once in loaf form, and after that in mini muffin forms. I prefer the mini muffins, as they are already in a one day portion.
I also freeze my muffins/bread in little baggies and dethaw as needed.
Cook time:
I usually bake at 350 degrees.
45 mins to an hour for a loaf of bread
20 minutes for a tray of muffins
I always check the bread (about 5 minutes before the minimum cook time), by inserting a toothpick or small fork in the center. If It comes out clean, it is done cooking
You can add anything that is safe for birds to this recipe. Dried fruit, nuts, and of course veggies
Places to find these ingredients:
Bulk food stores, health food stores, and the bulk food aisle in your local grocery stores
I found all mine at my local Bulk Barn
Enjoy the video of Peggy’s linnies gobbling down the birdie bread. She added wonderful things to her birdie bread, including sprouts, nuts and other grains
