Recipe: Rice and Veggie Birdie Pilaf

This recipe was submitted by Naarah (username Distract_A_Girl) on the forum and has been a hit with many of the members’ birds. Naarah says that of all the recipes she’s tried, this is her birds’ favorite!

Ingredients:

  • 4 1/2 cups brown rice (real brown rice, the stuff that takes an hour to cook — not the instant)
  • a 16 oz bag of frozen mixed veggies (carrots, corn, peas, green beans, and lima beans)
  • 1/2 cup Quiko Classic for all birds1
  • Powder vitamins (I’m using Prime)
  • Apple Cider Vinegar.

Directions:

  1. Defrost the bag of mixed veggies.
  2. Cook the brown rice completely according to directions (preferably using a rice cooker.)
  3. Once the rice has cooked, let it cool.
  4. Put the rice in a big bowl or container
  5. Mix in the veggies.
  6. Mix in the Quiko with a sprinkle of vitamins.
  7. Lastly, spray or sprinkle ACV over the top and mix it in. Serve at room temperature.
  8. As with any fresh foods, remove any uneaten foods within an hour or 2.
  9. Refrigerate enough for a couple of days and freeze the rest for later.

1 – Quiko is an egg food that adds protein and vitamins to your bird’s diet. The birds seem to love it when added to their meals. In this recipe, the Classic version was used. Drs. Foster and Smith carries it.
