I am a newbie to Linnes(get many other parrots) rescued one from a very grotty pet shop.
I acutally live in Scotland an would love to know of anybreeders up here (or even N England)
I actually live on west coast but could tavel etc.
Just desparately want a companion/s for my wee birdy

Broken Bone?

Hey guys, if my linnie had a broken wing or bone would he tell me, making noises of pain or anything? My poor charlie fell from a far drop on his right side and he wouldn't move his ride side or anything he just laid on in, even when i picked him up hed just lay in my hand and let anything touch him, hes standing on both legs now.. but he looks so sad.

It's that time of the year, the cold is moving in fast.

Chicken is often huddled down shivering and feet tucked up trying to keep warm. My home is cold (( my furnace is psycho )). In order for me to get it warm enough for chicken not to be showing signs she is cold, I have to be sweating and smelling like a yack!

What options do I have to warm her cage up without cranking my furnace full blast?

There was a Canadian site that had some products for heat and light but I see their site is not working...... and I don't want to wait to warm her up and give myself a break from the sweat lodge LOL

Suggestions needed! Links as well (( Canadian ones though if you please, so it is somewhat affordable... )) I may try hanging my heating pad outside her cage somehow tomorrow on low just to give her a spot where she can huddle in a bit for warmth.

OMG!!! An egg is chirping!

Finally the hen left the box and I got to check on the eggs...one has turned a strange mottled purple. I picked it up...it's got a crack around one end and is SO hot! And it's moving! And what's that sound? That little cheep cheep sound...it's coming from the egg! There's a live baby linnie inside who already has a lot to say! Today's the day, egg #1...right on time too!

I bought the new Johnny Reid CD last night. Got home...and realized that the birds were sleeping, so I anxiously waited until today to play it. It appears that Fred is also a big Johnny Reid fan! This is what I hear every time I play it! I may have to go to the car, to listen to it in peace!!!

Click on the pic, and turn up the volume to appreciate the " quality" of the voices!!!!

Hubby and I danced in the living room today to one of the songs, and Fred laughed so long and hard, we couldn't hear the music.

Fred manages to integrate himself into everything we do....I do love this bird!!!!

Ok I know I am a woman and all but we really have issues!!!

My brother and his girlfriend broke up and she served him with papers trying to take away his weekend visitation with the baby and give him 4hrs one week and 12 hours everyother week. that is it!!! He did not do anything wrong and wants 50/50 time with the baby. He wants to be a dad so why is she being such a &%^*@!!!!!!!!!!

Just had to vent because my friends ex-wife did the same thing to him, it's a girl thing. Women are NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!

O no - not again!

Over the last few days,Scruff and Squeek have decided to start breeding again without my permission:(
it started with them running under my chairs and pulling all the wadding out,then they had better ideas,they would make a nest out of the till roll in there cage,

so i have given them there box back and.........................
yes just a week after all this happened i have a egg..........

it is 6mths since they laid there last clutch and these were hand raised at a eairly age,So i think they will be ok,But i am not able to hand raise this clutch,so i will be keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well....

Glad I found you... I sure can use your guidance and expertise. I have been reading lots on the internet, but this seems like an awesome place to learn from the experts. I am a first time owner of a two Linnies that I got from a rescue. They are said to be about 1 yr. and 1 1/2 yrs. old and may or may not be a pair?? One is green with a little yellow on the wings and one is blue, I think perhaps what they call cobalt?? They were alone and quiet for the first 3 days that I got them. Since then, I have been on vacation from my job and have been spending lots of time getting to know them. I have made some mistakes already as I read some of the posts here. Hopefully in time I can undo those mistakes.
I am an animal lover, always have been, always will. I look back on family photos from a time when I was to young to remember and I always had some kind of animal with me.
Anway, glad I found you guys and am looking forward to learning from you and sharing with you. Thanks!

help with choosing a nest box

So we have finally decided to put a nest box in Candy and Carrots cage to try and help Carrot with Candy's over preenng.

I have never bred birds before and although i have read all your threads about your experiences i am terrified of doing something wrong :yikes:

Can you recommend a web site that has good advice or a book??

What size nest box do you use and what do i put in it?

Do i need to give them any special food apart from egg food and for how long before?

Sorry loads i know i will leave it at that for now.
Any advice would be apprieciated Thankyou in advance

curiosity got the best of me

I now know that Diamond is a male
my heart was broke when two little birds were in the eggs I broke open to look into
I truly wasn't expecting to see two little dead babies

it really took my breath away

so I tried to separate them
and Diamond almost hung himself through the bars of his new cage
his head never should of fit
but he wanted back in the other cage and nothing was going to stop him

so back he went
we have limited their day light
we have taken away all nesting stuff
and still she is wanting to lay eggs
she layed another two days ago
and she totally abandoned the old eggs
hadn't gone near them since last Wednesday

please don't shoot the messenger
I just wanted to share my heartbreak
and new happenings

Aviator Harness

Hi Everyone! :)
I don't have my linnie yet, but I have always thought that it would be awesome if I could take my bird outside with me. Obviously I wouldn't take him/her outside with no harness or anything even if his/her wings were clipped. So I researched harnesses and found that Aviator Harnesses seemed to be the best made bird harness out there. But do they fit on linnies?? It said that the smallest size was for 60-110 gram birds like cockatiels, so would it be too big??

sorry about all the new threads today, have to make up for lost time:smash:

I've got a question about over preening, Candy is over preening Carrot, to the point of bald patches, I dont have a spare cage at the moment, only a travel cage, i wouldnt want to put carrot in a seperate cage because he has done nothing wrong. I tried to put him in Coco and dodgers cage, they did not fight but he called for Candy the whole time:(.

Would a breeding box solve the issue or would it make it worse?, i dont want to make it worse when her hormones come into play, if they are not already.:yikes:

They are both have last years rings on them, although i do not know when last year, they have always been together and apart from this are a happy couple for the most part.

These i thought were a bargin for the quality and size of each toy they work out just �2 each in my local bird shop they are at least �8 each some as much as �14, i ordered sunday over the bank holiday weekend and they arrived on the tuesday, the cage i ordered came the same day

Small Parrot: Update on Angel's screaming issue

Well it has been 5 nights of me leaving Angel uncovered and NO screaming!! I was afraid the 1st night was just a coincidence but nope :D!

She just hated being covered! LOL

And she does not make any noises in the morning until she hears mommy getting up:thumbsup: I was worried she would be up at the crack of dawn :giggle:
I can even put her in her cage around 10:30 at night and watch tv quietly and she is fine! She eats her treats and goes in her hut:)

She is such a good girl! I just love her so much! Of course I loved her with the screaming too!;)

All my birdies are very good girls! I am lucky!

Hello, I'm David, new to this forum and new to breeding. I have many questions and things I'd like to learn about before I will take any chances with breeding. So, here it goes...

How often do birds breed, and how many babies are produced by each pair per breeding season?

What is a good breeding stock quantity to start with? And, where do you guys go to obtain your breeding stock?

Any suggested reading�print or web�that explain the ins and outs of breeding birds?

Luna Knows When I Go

Just wondering how well your linnie knows you.

Two funny things Luna does are

1) Chirps when I flush the toilet. She knows when it is me and only does it when I flush the toilet. And, if I wake up early and have to go she does not chirp until the 2nd time I have to go and flush the toilet. It is the funniest thing because my mom just went and when she flushed no noises from Luna. I went right after my mom and as soon as I flushed the toilet she chirped.

2) Luna makes noise when I turn the key to the front door when I am coming home. My parents say she doesn't do it for anyone else but when I turn the door knob.

How do our linnies know when it is us vs someone else?

She is one smart birdie.... and darn cute too!

cat and linnie?

I have a 7 year old cat, Athena, and am hoping for a linnie soon:). Although it's my family's cat (i'm 13), Athena likes me a lot (sometimes;)) and likes to sleep on my bed sometimes (but never at night). I don't want her to not like me anymore if I get a linnie. And how would I introduce them to hope that they will tolerate each other eventually (not like tweety and sylvester)? :confused:
If any of you have cats and linnies, anything is helpful!!

ok, so im already thinking about my next bird, i was supposed to get a rescued parrotlet to handfeed but the entire clutch must have gotten a chill being left on the shelter steps as none of the 3 babies survived :(

so i find myself looking into my next bird.

i do like p-lets, there so cute and feisty, but im thinking id like a slightly larger bird and both the hahns and severe macaws REALY apeal to me form everything ive been reading (my dream bird one day is a green wing macaw so im thinking starting with a small macaw would be a good thing)

im doing lots of online research, but of course personal experience is much more helpful.

im not planning on getting my next bird for a little while as im going in for surgery mid september and will be off my feet for a while after that...so no rush and ive still plenty of reserch time.

i do know a macaw no matter wether hahns or severe will need a bigger cage then the 30 x 18 ive currently got (which is fine, as it can go into storage untill i get my own place and a bird room lol)

in terms of me...i work from home and have agoraphobia so i pretty much stay home 24/7 lol, plenty of time to give any bird lots of one on one attention even with multiple birds.

im looking for a sociable bird, one who will will relish spending time with me and cuddly (i adore toos but there a little too loud lol)
a one person bird is fine :)

i also like greencheek and blue crown conure.

Just wondering...since linnies are so fond of running and hiding...although they are made for small rodents, maybe a linnie would enjoy one? My linnies are breeders but when I get some hand tamed pets I would like to allow them supervised playtime that is protected from my dog.

believe it or not there are three sides to Leon daily
early in the morning to mid day he is Taylor's play toy
I have to bite my tongue when I see them interacting together
she has him up
down and all around
today she was in the living room dancing about with him
I told her to be gentle as his poor brain must be spinning
but he seems to love it and always kisses her when she asks for them
and I mean kisses
think he's in as much love with her as she is him

then at night
his third personality comes out
he is a snuggler
and down the top dweller
and a quiet little dude who will take his scritches

in between the first and third is the second
he totally has his time to crash
he wants nothing to do with anyone
he will slip about in his cage
eat
and rest
and he totally enjoys his own time

it's amazing watching him as he goes about his day

does anyone else's linnie have multiple personalities or is just my little dude????

First time parents + their first time human need advice

Hey all. The first eggy has been laid and I am already starting to feel pressure. Whew :p Bolded the questions so they are easier to see in my massive wall of text!

For all you experienced breeders I would love any advice you can dish out for a first-timer. I read both the handfeeding stickies (and have definitely opted not to do so) as well as the breeding one.

The nestbox size is 11.5" L X 10" W X 14. I've got raffia grass and carefresh ultra as the bottom layer. Puck only entered the nestbox when I put an old winter hat inside on top of the substrate. I don't know if I should remove it because it severely limits the size of the nest?

How often do you breeders replace nesting substrate? I'm nervous about disturbing the babies when it is time to do so.

That thing in the corner is a temp. reader. Right now humidity fluctuates between 46-47% and temp at 77.3... What temp is recommended and how should I go about getting it up?

Jasper keeps entering the nest box and jostling Puck and her egg around and she ends up only partially sitting on it... :whistle: Even though I'm sure Puck knows what she's doing it still makes me nervous :giggle:

Right now they're on a diet of Roudybush Maintenance Premium pellets. Their daily softs include cooked carrots, green beans, alfalfa sprouts, collard greens, corn, and kale, as well as small amounts of apple and banana. Jasper is regurgitating for her and despite more than a year of access to veggies, he hates them and does not eat them. Should I be switching to another more breeder-friendly pellet since he is the one feeding Puck, and she is getting nothing but pellets? What diet are your breeders on, and what do you use as a source of extra calcium? I heard that cuttlebones are loaded with chemicals and that the backing can cut the intestines.

I also want to mark the egg (and future eggs) to record their progress. Is it okay to mark the shell with a marker?

And the final slew of questions: When will it be okay to start interacting with the babies? Should I band them and if so, when, and where can I get them? Approximately how long does it take for an egg to hatch? When should I separate the babies from mom and dad?

My daughter and I just walked all over the dollar store looking for stuff to make bird toys. Has anyone ever used crepe paper? Is this safe for our birds? Also we got "baskets,box, and bag shred". Is this safe? Either tomorrow or Monday we are going to attempt to make a playstand out of pvc. Can't wait.

Biting Own Feet!

Hey all,

I know I haven't been around lately got a new job that I was settling in to so haven't been able to comment so much.

Lilo is about 5/6 months old now and ever since I have had her she has bitten her own feet. She sometimes growls or makes an irritated noise and at first I thought she did it like a dog chases its tail.

However, lately its become a lot more frequent and she does it a lot more furiously. Almost as if she doesn't like them or theres something on them she wants to get off. She doesn't have mites so it can't be that. Her feet don't bleed or look raw but I can't help but feel shes damaging them in some way.

Has anyone else experienced this or is it just a quirky thing Lilo is doing? I just wana make sure I'm doing right by my little baby :)

As most of you know my girl had a serious hate for "step-up" command and in order to get her to step up, I had to change the command to "help". Once I said help she would easily step up on my finger even when she was out of the cage, crashed on the floor and scared. When I used the command step-up she would attack.

Well I can honestly say after 5 months of patience, using "help" as the command and taking my share of nips... she began to get less and less scared of stepping on to my hand.

Of course with her hormones all training ground to a stop.

I noticed this week that she seemed slightly less hormonal (( from 100% hormones down to about 70 - 80% )) so she is still prone to giving me what for in the form of a big old bite but I do my best to avoid them and when she DOES bite she gets told and she knows better.

ANYWAY long story short....

This last week or so she has REALLY dug her heels in about her dislike for her showers...... but I dug MY heels in too - her morning shower is not negotiable. Refusing to go to her shower perch for 20 minutes one morning I got frustrated and put my hand in front of her and said "Step-up". She bit me hard which I knew would happen but I gave her heck and said again... Step up. (( I do not push her "off balance" as many people do to "teach" I simply put it there and GENTLY touched her belly. The first day she refused so I pet her belly and feet lol )).

Well now EVERY SINGLE MORNING I have been using the STEP-UP command to move her to her shower perch, SUCCESSFULLY! Yup That first to third day I got bit but I have not been bit for 4 days on that command.

I am TAKING BACK the official STEP-UP command.

No more is it something negative.
I ask her to step up.
She steps up immediately, no fuss... no bites.
I praise her like crazy and tell her what a good girl she is.
She rides my finger all the way to her perch then hops off.

Ooops, I meant to start a thread about Ninja a few weeks ago :o what can I say, it has been insanely busy here!

After a vet visit, I made the "mistake" of going to a Petsmart on the other side of town "just to look". I saw this amazingly acrobatic scrawny little green cheek conure in one of the cages. He was totally showing off, dangling upside down by one toy, dancing up and down and doing his best to impress.

I managed to leave the store without him (after looking at his price tag and nearly passing out). But I could not stop thinking about this little guy. So of course I went home and told hubby who told me if I REALLY wanted, to go buy him.

So, I went back to the store the next day :giggle:The poor little guy was not really handled much the whole time he was at the store (several months), I don't know exactly how old he is but has a current-year band. Going by his stage in molting I am guessing around 6-8 months. He is pretty handshy, and had no clue how to step up. But the amazing thing was, he does NOT bite. Even when he was scared and I grabbed him at the store, checked him all over, not even a nip. He will make an angry noise, but no bite. So considering the reputation for Green cheeks being so nippy, I considered this an excellent sign and brought him home:D

He learned to step up within the first day. He is still scared of hands, especially the first few minutes he is out each time, but he is getting better and better, and after he relaxes a bit he really enjoys his head scritches :lovehearts: He is really good at sitting on shoulders though!

He is also in LOVE with sunflower seeds, so I now only feed those out of the cage. He won't take food from my hands yet, but I hold a dish and he will sit on my hand and eat his "crack" (seeds) from the dish.

The Petsmart had been feeding him just Tropican pellets and some millet. He is still learning about what fruit & veggies are. I've now got him eating blueberries, grapes, corn and starting on some peas. We have a ways to go, but that is a start. At least he is a good pellet eater! And he gets his seed mix (no sunflower) for supper. Now that he is starting to take baths and showers, his feathers are looking much better. Once he gets through his molt and the stress-barred baby feathers are gone he is gonna be a handsome guy (even though he is on the small side)

Ninja and Phoenix are sorta friends. NInja really wants to be freinds, Phoenix is not convinced yet. Ninja likes to chase her around and head butt her again and again asking for preening :rofl2:Sometimes she will preen him, sometimes she attacks him! I don't actually want them to get along too well, I plan to get them each a mate of their own species!

So Buster who thinks Tiny Tim is his mate, is starting to get more territorial over the cage. I have been letting them share a cage sometimes if I am running late and don't have time to seperate them after I first let them out in the a.m. while I get their veggies, seed, fresh water ready. He charges at my hand now and boxes it with his beak but he doesn't seem to know how to bite which is a good thing. Will this pass? He is becoming such a little stinker! We had a great time and had a few laughs too at My Nana&Pops:):photo:to follow!! Loki was a pretty well behaved little boy there was a few tiffs here and there but he seemed a little more comfortable after a couple of hours:thumbsup::)!! At one point Rico and Loki were following each other around(on each side of the cage..it was cute. And there was a bit(he certianly has a mean bite when he wants too:() of biting but we think it's more of a hormonel thing then Loki being uncomfortable. He was doing quite of bit of handfeeding as well,discovered some new toys,fell in love with a fleece tent that my Nana had in the cage for him(he got to bring it home with him;),hung out with the others for a bit and had his bath as well!! Omg it's a good thing his brother Rico and Loki have different colored bands cause without them they could be twin brothers!! :rofl2:

Well, here he is! :hurray:

His name is Solaris (not sure yet if I am keeping that name), they assume him to be male (I will DNA) and he is turning 3 years this month.

He's feeling pretty freaked out, had a rough day so far, poor little guy. I met the owners in a grocery store parking lot :rolleyes: they had him in a little cat carrier. So I get into their truck to see him, and when they open the carrier door he gets out and is flying all over the cab of the truck. We almost had him a few times, and he'd slip away. Then we almost really lost him when he started crawling up behind the dash! And then I REALLY had a heart attack when the owners opened the car door to get on the floor and reach up behind the dash to get him - I was sure he would end up flying out of the car. :smash: But, they managed to get him out. He has a bruise on his cere and some ruffled feathers, but otherwise none the worse for wear. He feels a bit thinner that I would like, but not horribly so.

I've now got him moved into an 18x18x30 breeder cage. The previous owners sent his favorite toy with him (he apparently likes to sit under this toy and wear it like a hat) along with a big baggie of seed/pellet mix and a baggie of millet....so at least he can see some familiar foods. Apparently he really likes apple (real surprise, huh? a linnie liking apple? lol)

They say he talks (says Hi, how are ya and a few other things, and also does alarms, sirens, sound effects). He is pretty shy of hands but really likes to be talked to. He is pretty damn cute. I had never actually seen a Linnie in real life until today, only in pictures. He is bigger than I was expecting!

Well! I did visit Peggy today and she is a very nice, kind person who loves taking care of her beautiful fids. I have never seen such a flock of fat, healthy, radiant birds! I am in trouble at home because I did bring home an English Budgie- a fluffy pied grey boy. Oh my Goddess- you should see her English Budgies. She has violet ones, blue ones, yellow/turq ones, they are exquisite. I was very, very distracted. I put down a deposit for a fat, dark turq linnie too which we think is a girl. My spouse is very annoyed already heheheheh I am in big trouble. Sigh. I am very broody, what can I do. Peggy showed me how to sprout and soak seeds and I got to see her veggie mix, which looks like tabouli salad to me. I wanted to eat it, frankly, but we ate some Chinese food instead.

Sophia (of Sophia'sflock fame) drove up to meet me this morning. She brought Nilu- her adorable cobalt female linnie with her. We had a wonderful time...and alas, Sophia succumbed to her MBS, smitten by an adorable linnie chick. What can I say... they are adorable :lovehearts:

Sophia brought Chinese food, and we enjoyed eating it while looking out onto the patio, the canaries and finches flying in and out of the house. while Torrey and Honeycomb, a couple of my cockatiels, nibbled on bits of rice from our plates.

Sophia is a darling, such a pleasure to meet people on the forum and find out they are so engaging. Nothing like bird lovers getting together.

Nilu enjoyed her time as well. She especially liked the linnie garden and getting sprayed. All my linnies were curious about this newcomer. I love the pictures on the branch with all the linnies checking her out.

I went to the post office this morning to mail Angels DNA test so hopefully next week I will know! The post office said guaranteed delivery for Tuesday and the DNA place said 24-48 hours for results.

Poor girl was so mad at me last night when I clipped her nail and made her bleed:( She even opted out of night time cuddles to be in her cage!!
Thank goodness all is forgiven today though:D

A 3 year old Lutino, the seller thinks he is male (but is not DNA'd). Apparently he is semi-tame (doesn't bite but is handshy) and he talks. He is in a big molt but he looks nice and healthy, they guy is asking a really good price for him, as he wants him to find a good bird-experienced home that will give him Linnie friends (which I plan to do :D, he would be Linnie #1 but I have plans for more than that!).

So, if this little yellow dude looks as healthy in person as he does in the pic, he will be coming home tomorrow!:hurray:

and was sold to me as the younger half of a breeding pair. The hen is very eager to breed. Him? Not so much. He won't go in the nest box and won't feed her. He seems to see her as a surrogate mother. I went ahead and took the nest box out since she's laying clear eggs...3 or 4 so far. Maybe the nest box is too much commitment for my Peter Pan right now? Being that he was hand raised, perhaps he just doesn't have the know-how or the desire to breed?

Has anyone had any experience with a hand raised male like mine becoming a good parent? Any strategies? Do you think it would help to separate him entirely from the hen for awhile, keep him on his own and then put them back together later?

May just have to find another male for her if he doesn't come around with time...

You know how people are always trying to give one animals once they know you're a cat/bird/etc. person? (Or maybe it's just me that has SUCKER written all over my face? :rutrohshaggy: ) Well, that's how these two came to me.

A month or so ago, the wife of one of our residents asked me if I'd consider adopting two birds that belonged to her daughter's friends. They'd lost their cat after 20 years, and had bought the keets impulsively afterwards, before realizing they just weren't really bird people. The last I'd heard, they'd decided to keep them after all, but then I got a call on Sunday asking if I'd still take them. So, Sunday night, the two as-then unnamed keets were chauffeured to my door along with all their earthly possessions packed in a big bag.

They are so adorable, I'm beside myself! They are remarkably adaptable and seemed right at home after just one night - they're eating, drinking, chirping, playing with their new toys, and even tasting the Roudybush Nibles I put in their cage. :boogie:

I have two linnies, Puck and Jasper, who the breeder said were both male. Jasper was DNA tested. He also told me that double dilutes (Puck) were always male, so he didn't DNA the little bugger.

Well... is that really true? Lately, Puck has been spending A LOT of time in his happy hut. I have NEVER seen any nesting activity from him whatsoever (shredding the straw and whatnot from his toys)... so I never doubted the fact that he was a male. I've noticed that his vent is sort of swollen these past couple days. I could've sworn two weeks ago he weighed 50 grams, and now he is 56 grams. There have been no changes in his diet.

Just a few minutes ago, I looked over my shoulder and saw Jasper mounting Puck (they have done this in the past before, and Puck has tried to get on top of Jasper and vice-versa, so I assumed they WERE both male). I didn't get to see very well, but I think they both connected.

Right now, Puck is pushing at the insides of his happy hut like my female lovebird does when she is nesting. He has not shredded any material to actually nest in, however, and has never laid any infertile eggs.

Is Puck really a female, and seriously eggnant? Or is he overweight? 56 grams is on the heavy side, but I seriously don't recall him being that much two weeks ago. Should cart him off to the vet to see what's going on?

Bah! Responses would be greatly appreciated!

Taylor's apt was a nightmare

if I wasn't awake I would of thought it was a bad dream

we arrived
and were told we were a new patient
apparently as we canceled our June apt we were put in as new
not a big deal in the beginning but we were suppose to see
the four people there and the fourth wasn't on the apt schedule and well
we ended up being thrown in to see him

first off
hubby's dystonia is really bad
his head shakes in the no gesture
and so the doctor
the dietitian and the diabetic nurse thought he was shaking his head at them when we went in
that set the mood

they started talking
and did not have the info that Sick kids promised us would be there
I asked them to call Sick kids and they said it doesn't work that way
that they would only get an answering machine

in a five minute time period they asked what Sick kids told hubby
hubby told them
they heard half the story and then called hubby and I out to speak to us without Taylor
in five seconds they dropped on us that Taylor might be seizuring
I cried
and they discussed sending us back to Sick kids for ether an endo or neuro apt
well
they heard what they wanted to about her spells
hubby got upset
and the doctor said
just take her off her insulin to see what happens

we left the meeting
went to make another apt
the nurse knew I was upset
so asked the fourth doctor to see us
he called us in when he was done an apt
and we talked
the doctor ended up being called back in
her mood and tone changed to the positive
and she said she did not think anything bad would happen with Taylor's blood sugar readings if she were off the insulin
I said did you not see Taylor's reading on the metor
and she was shocked to see some as high as they were
she changed her mind about the coming off insulin

soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
we leave
I think I'm in shock
confused about what when on
and later in the day called home to see if there were any messages
there is one
from the doctor we saw
saying the Sick kids report was in her office in the morning like Sick kids promised
and
that Taylor does not have MODY
but does had Type 1

I still think I'm in a bad dream
want to go back and see it in black and white
but really don't want to be told it's the real thing

so
pinch me and tell me I was sleeping
sorry for the rant

and want off the roller coster ride

hubby has taught him to whistle the Star Wars song
and he is picking up on so many of the sounds in the house and he sounds so like them

Have been wanting one for awhile, just didn't want to have to go all the way to Mississauga to buy one. Found a local health food store and they had it cheaper than my bird store, they also had milk thistle, cheaper than my vet. When unemployed I learned to look around and get the best deals. :thumbsup:

Any way also got organic sandwich seeds so tomorrow will start growing sprouts for the fids and kids and me.

Small Parrot: Bedtime Screaming Issues...HELP!

Ok so me and Angel (GCC) are having a little disagreement on bedtime:giggle:

I was putting her to sleep around 8:30 with Willow but it became obvious that was to early for her and once she is covered I can not be in the same room because she won't settle down. So she stays up with me until 10 or 11 watching tv and cuddling.

After I cover her she screams bloody murder for about 5 - 10 minutes, most likely waking up Willow and the linnies, not to mention the whole neighborhood!:yikes: I retire to the kitchen/bedroom because I can not be in the livingroom or she won't be quiet at all.

THEN everytime she hears me move about she yells for me. It can be 2am and I am going to the bathroom, as soon as she hears my feet hit the floor she yells. I am doing dishes and she yells, etc. Anytime of night, it is like she never goes to sleep!

I need to stop this before the neighbors move upstairs, any suggestions? I do not respond at all to her calling me but she has been doing it since I got her. I thought she would eventually stop when she realized it got her nowhere but she has not yet.

I already stopped being in the living room with her once she is in bed but I am not going to bed at the same time to appease her!

I do not have a bird room but even with one I am sure no ones house is completely quiet after the birds go to bed! Willow and the linnies have never had this problem. Once covered they are quiet for the night even when I am quietly watching tv in the living room.

Monday found the first egg in the nest box! Woo hoo! 2 days later...find an egg on the floor of the cage. Not so great. Try to get the hen off the nest to return the egg, but she isn't budging. So I actually slip the egg under her. She doesn't move or react in any way. That's OK, I think, she's now sitting on both eggs.

This afternoon she leaves the nest box so I take the opportunity to inspect. Fully expecting to see 2 eggs of course...but guess what! There's only one! I ruffle thru the Aspen litter, thinking she must have hidden the second egg. Nope. Nada. Zip. So either she ate one of the eggs and left no trace of it behind...no eggshell, no goo, nothing. OR...she drop kicked that single egg all the way across the cage and it landed without breaking! Most peculiar...:shrug:

Monday morning as my mom and I got ready to go on a "mini vacation" Luna and Sage had a big "fight" It scared me because it has never been that loud before and they were both winded after. So I put Luna in the other cage and separated them for the day/night.

I think what I'll do is have a sleep cage that they share and two day/play cages for when I'm out of the house or for them to just hang around in for play time. They do fine when out and about, but when they're in the same cage they fight about everything! Right now I'm just going to make due with the cages I have, but I did find a cage on allpetfurniture that I really like. It had horizontal and vertical bars which is nice. And the top is a dome top that opens, which is perfect for what I have in mind! So this isn't such a bad thing lol.

So I guess I'll just have to deal with good and bad days. I'm just thankful that most of my days are good! :] It's rarely a bad day around with them.. I think I'll call it their uhm "time of the month" LOL :rofl2:

I'm actually really excited about this plan because I get to buy new cages and stuff them full of goodies... and that is always nice XD

Oh and our "mini vacation" was awesome. We took my brothers kids to an indoor water park in Boyne falls, MI. They had a blast.. well so did we actually. I would recommend staying at Grand Mountain Lodge to anyone who visits northern Michigan! It's such a great place, and they're very very nice there. We had ONE thing wrong with our food order (it wasn't even a big deal type of thing) and they didn't charge us for the whole dinner. We didn't even complain. I was amazed.. plus it saved me 40 dollars. I want to live there lol! We swam ALL day until 11pm. They had to kick us out of the hotel pool xD

Also sage is definitely molting, poor baby is stuck full of pinnies. No wonder she's so moody. :lovehearts:

And I'm in the process of cutting Luna's toe nails..... I think two a day should be good ahhaha. :yikes: I just get so nervous because it makes her nervous. Poor little thing.

She's about 3, a proven lutino. Beautiful bird, glorious color, a Marilyn Monroe of the linnie world. He's 1.5 years old, dark green, hand raised. She's feeding him. He's more interested in me than her. He guards the food bowls and squabbles with her over access. They do allopreen, but it's usually coming his way. She's been in the nest box for over a week now. They may well have mated, but he doesn't go in the box. One egg in the box on Monday. This morning another egg appeared...on the bottom of the cage. She was in the nest box, didn't stir when I slid the egg under her. But there's no way a hen can hatch and rear chicks without help from the male, right? Is there anything I can do to help him step up to his duties as a mate and parent? I'm thinking about putting a thin cloth over the cage so he can't see me...

Wish Peter Pan would grow up...and join the bird world while he's at it!

Oh so Angel likes to come in the shower with me, I have a mist setting on my shower head and she sits on the shelf and closes her eyes and gets soaked! When I point it away from her she squawks for me to put it back:lol:

Handfeeding with a scoop instead of a spoon

OK, I tried the spoon thing, but my greedy little chicks slurp up the spoon too fast and don't like to wait while I refill it... so I came up with this:

Note there is a little catch basin to get the drippings and to prevent "linnie beards" :lol: You know those cereal beards that can build up when hand feeding. The scoop is at an easier angle for me to hold than a spoon, too.

Here's a close up of the scoop.

I got the idea from Alma to cut a wedge (she does it in a spoon) which makes it easier for them to get into the food. I also softened the pointy edges left from the wedge cut.

are now living together. Jackson is a totally different bird now, he is no longer a perch potato, he plays with toys :yikes:, runs up and down the ropes, climbs the ladder, wow. You have to understand he has been here since April, 2009 and just sat there every day. I'm so pleased and happy for him.

Oliver is the same, didn't change when he moved in with Jackson, still very active but now has more attitude :whistle:

I have been playing with their cage set up, will see how it goes, am sure I will have to make more changes.

Will post pics. tomorrow, (I hope). This is so good, my boys are happy!

I wanted to share that Willy and Bernard have become real buddies. :):)
They share eachothers cage and food.:p:p I finally converted Willy over to 1/4 seeds mixed with 3/4 pellets. Now Bernard can poke his beak in with out spazzing out on seeds.
Yesterday Willy even tried to get a leg up on Bernard:o:lovehearts:
Bernard doesnt swing that way and casually walked away from him:cool:

I was in the kitchen making the fids their salad and I heard a noise from the sunroom which was obviously a bird hitting the glass. I went and checked and sure enough there were some purple grapes from one of our vines smashed against the window and a feather. I looked outside and saw nothing so I went out and found a baby robin. He was obviously stunned. I called Ted to bring my camera and took some picks. The pics I missed are really disappointing. Ted chased him around a little then picked him up and gave him some head rubs. He sat quietly in his hand and closed his eyes and enjoyed. :lovehearts: After a few minutes Ted put him on the vines and he scooted away. The splats and feather are difficult to see in the pic unfortunately.

I am going to give her a calcium supplement and let her sit on the eggs as long as she wants. This explains the biting.

Moved the nest box today

I've got my first ever clutch of linnie eggs--six!! Woo Hoo!
The nest box needed to be in a more convenient location...convenient for the parents? Heck no, convenient for me, of course! It was inside the cage, blocked by the perch, and I can't reach the bottom of it. The parents are first timers, but they are SO calm and cool! The hen doesn't mind at all if I look so hey, what's wrong with looking every day? Must have easier access! so I moved the box outside of the cage...and waited...waited...parents looking VERY confused, and not going near the eggs in their new location. Waited perhaps one hour before realizing that the birds aren't accepting my nifty idea. Sick feeling. Put the nest box back inside the cage. WHEW! Both parents went back in immediately.
Now I'm thinking to move the box 1/2" per day to achieve my devious ends. But seriously, I doubt they will be able to raise 6 chicks, right? Don't I need to remove bad eggs or other items? (that I don't want to specify because it's too tragic...but trying to be ready for reality).

it's amazing how routined Leon is
he really enjoys is naps during the day when I am out at work which I have been doing a fair bit of lately
but he knows right after dinner and for the rest of the night he's out of his cage and a night time snuggler:)

he'll run about in his cage from door to door when he knows I am going to let him out
and he will sit and snuggle all night long

tonight he has been out sleeping inside my top
he's ready for bed and so am I so off we'll both go
he gets his kisses and then he gets tucked in:lovehearts:

Here are some pictures of my linnies. I have not posted for a while, so I thought I would post some now.
The creamino is Nugget, the green is Pickles, the colbalt is Merlin and the tourquoise is Wizard.
Pickles is the only female. Wizard and Merlin are a couple and both males, Nugget and Pickles are friends but Nugget wants Merlin and Merlin does not want nothing to do with Nugget, so Merlin will chase Nugget away and bite his tail. Pickles the female fights with Merlin because she wants Nugget.
I saw Pickles and Wizard getting close yesterday until Merling came along and chased Pickles away. I have them all together in a HQ flight cage. The two pairs had their separate cages and I decided to try again in the same cage. I will see how it goes for a little while and might have to separate them. It is a very bad love triangle going on in the same cage.

This is Rockette the conure and Kiwi the Goldies Lorikeet. They are best friends. I have to watch them and separate them when Kiwi gets to excited. Kiwi wants to be romantic with Rockette. Kiwi is the male and Rockette is the female.
I have to put their cages side by side or they will scream. I am also afraid that Kiwi's sharp and pointed beak will bite Rockette.

we got the call
I think I've cried all I can

the seven month DNA analysis came back with Taylor NOT having MODY
I was so hoping she would have it as most of the time it can be treated with diet and pills
-it's sort of like Type 2 but an early onset version of it cause it's effected a young child or youth

however

they called
and hubby called them back
the message from Sick Kids was to treat her as Type 1
they are going to send the paper work to her specialist, as I didn't take the call I didn't ask the for sure for sure does she have it question

she is happy
think relieved to just know now that it's what it is and she got the news just a bit before her birthday
last year she was sort of told it was Type 1 just a day before her birthday so the month and a bit notice was a nice relief

we go this week to see her specialist - I am still hoping that I am living in a bad dream and she will be told Wednesday that she is fine-the blood tests are wrong
and that all the screening was done for nothing

am I a dreamer??? YES

Please think about her on Wednesday and keep your fingers crossed that for some silly reason they will tell us they are wrong and it's all a bad dream

don't get me wrong
we have been dealing with it
she has been giving herself insulin
but she is prediabetic
and with that being said
they are saying she might not be effect so badly in her teen years and she has already been dealing with it so horomones won't be kicked about too badly as she has accepted it already

Molting Moodiness...

Remy is going through his molt right now and I'm having a bit of a problem.
He wants space. And that's ok. But the first baby molt takes a while and in the last few days he's been very distant and hasn't been wanting to come to me. He normally rushes to the side of the cage when I come by and he hasn't been doing that. I'm really bummed. I miss my little buddy boy!!

How should I continue? Should I force him to come out? I'm scared that forcing him will make him scared of me. but I'm also scared that if I leave him alone to go through this it'll be too much time (it's been about 2 weeks already) and he'll continue to get more distant..

Thoughts?!

I feel a bit guilty starting a thread about a pineapple green cheek on a linnie forum, but so many others of you have other birds that I thought it might be ok.

I brought a pineapple green cheek home last week. I had wanted one for many years, but she was the first the store had. It is a good thing, because I am sure she would have been impossibly spoiled had she been here before all the other birds came.

She is up for any type of handling. I am finding it hard to disciplin her as consistently as I do Roni, senegal, because her bites don't really hurt all that much.

I know you want pictures. We will all have to wait.

ok so I put Leon to bed tonight
he gets his kisses
and he gets put in his cage

off he goes to the bottom of the cage to shuffle his way under the newspaper
guess he figures that's he place he'll sleep there
I've wanted to put a tent in his condo but I'm worried he'll get caught with my luck
so the poor bugger is sleeping on the bottom of his cage under newspaper

oh well
my college sociology teacher said newspaper kept him warm on the streets of New York when he was collecting his info for his thesis paper
guess Leon is warm but not sure about comfortable

and even when I did try to put his tent in he freaked and ran about his cage not wanting to go near it
he's afraid of anything new and doesn't like change
just like his mommy lol:whistle:

Remy gets a new cage!

I have decided that Remy is going to stay downstairs with me.
What made me decide this is a few weeks ago we redid our floor in the dining room and I was nervous Remy was going to get sick from the fumes. So up to the birdroom he went. I was worried how he'd do and he was NOT happy!! He called to Gus and Bernard and they of course ignored him. And I could tell he was let down.

So the decision was made!!! And the first order of business was to get Remy a nice permanent cage for the downstairs.

A few things swayed me to the Marvelous cages. I loved their design. I love the size. And I love the price!

Here's the result! The white cage was what he is in now, it's about an 18x18. The new one is 24x22. He hasn't stopped chattering since he's been in there!! I need to get a boing and a swing for him!!

Insect sticky trap danger

So I'm bored while sitting here... so I decided I was going to look at craigslist to see what's going on there. I've been thinking about getting another bird.. well I want two male parakeets. I love parakeets! Anyway I searched for parakeets on craigslist and there is a beautiful boy for sale on there.. he's in a tiny little cage. I want to go get him but I don't have room! It makes me sad. The cage that he is in is the same cage I use for a travel cage :[ The ad says "I want him gone asap" which makes me want to go get him even more... my mom will think I have gone crazy if I try to fit more things in my room. I have a small room lol. I should take a picture of it... when it's clean of course :giggle:It doesn't take much to mess it up.

Anyway I know I can't have him, but I do know that my next bird will come from craigslist. The only way I'd bring another bird in from another house is if I lived in my own place so i could quarantine.

Also, I'm really excited because i'm going to go back to school in January. I would have started right about now, but I didn't have enough time to save money. By the time December comes around I should have a enough for two classes.

The only reason I have to pay for my classes is because I basically had a mental breakdown last December and didn't finish my classes. I tried to finish two, but I got sick on top of that.. I ended up failing before I could withdrawal/drop. They put me on academic probation, which means I don't have the GPA to qualify for a pell grant or a Michigan grant called TIP.
I have taken a year off to work on me, and I now know I'm ready to go back. They told me if I finish two classes with good grades I would be off academic probation and I will qualify for the pell grant again. :hurray:

I decided I'm going to take a painting class and re-take an English class so I can get that done and over with. I have a paper I wrote a while back that I think I will share on here sometime. It's my favorite one. Oh look A.D.D. just showed up. :whistle:

The degree program I'm signed up for is Liberal Arts - fine arts.. I'm not sure If I'm going to stay on that track.. I'm not sure if I should finish that program for an associates degree, and then go back and start Elementary education. Or should I just get on the Elementary education track right now.. I haven't decided what I want to do with those yet! It's so hard to make decisions. Why can't I be a kid again? :whistle:

Sorry most of this doesn't have to do with birds, I just started to ramble. I was going to say after winter/spring semester my plan is to move into my own place, and that is when I'd be able to save a few parakeets lol. That was my point this whole time.. ramble ramble ramble.

Fred's a Big 'Ole Chicken

It always surprises me how "skittish" Fred can be at times. He's a big bird with a big attitude sometimes, but honestly, Levi is braver than Fred. Today, Fred was afraid to go into his day cage because I had rearranged the cage, and rotated the toys. He refused to go in, even for breakfast! The problem was a bell, the same bell, that came with him...but now, he hasn't seen it for three weeks, and it's a big scary monster!
After lunch, all the birds went outside on the patio. Fred went outside in his night cage, as always. All was well. I check on the birds every few minutes, and when I did, Fred is clinging to the side of the cage, as if the hounds of hell are after him. He flat out refused to step on the perch in the cage. I checked it for splinters, I took the blueberries out of his bowl, as he's deathly afraid of blueberries(I buried them under his mash, hoping he'd taste them). Finally I brought him in. He played atop the same cage, talking happily. Bedtime came...Fred refused to get in the cage. He's acting again as if there is a monster in that cage....I removed the toy...the same toy that has been in that cage for weeks. My only thought is that the wind blew it on him, and he got spooked. He happily went to bed, once it was removed. Poor Fred....What a scary day!!!

Perch Poncho

I have read about the nails of linnies getting caught in fabric. I have used a "perch poncho" for my p'lets for several years. I had an extra, so I put it in Iris' cage and she loves it. Why would Millie and Niblet not sleep together

I think this isn't anything I should worry about but I have to wonder.

Millie and Niblet have never fed each other. Millie will regurgitate food but she just let's it drop to the bottom of the cage. They often want to be together and touching and perform the mating ritual despite the fact that at some point Millie will squawk and and scold Nibbie.
I've noticed in the past few weeks that they no longer sleep together. Millie is up against the fleece pal and Nibbie is on the other end of the perch.
For the most part I truly believe they love each other but I wonder why they seem to keep some distance. Could it be that Rico spends allot of his time following Millie and when Millie and Niblet get amorous, he is always within inches. Or maybe Millie is too cranky and needs to shower more often. :rofl2:

Mr. Ripper's Sleeping Spot

Yesterday I rearranged Mr Ripper's cage around, like I usually do every 2 weeks. And this morning when I went to give him and the other 2 food and water, I found my cutie patootie sleeping between the bars of his cage and shreddable toy. With his sleepy expression he just looked soooo cute! I literally oohed and awed over him for about 5 minutes straight. He just looked so cute cuddled in there, blinking sleepily up at me. lol!

I made this Pumpkin Warmies Set for the nice nurse, at the plastic surgeon's office where I have been getting treated for skin cancer, who just gave birth.

Cute story: Just sat down to finish tying up the loose ends on the mittens when I looked up and saw Cloud watching me very closely. I told him I was playing with the yarn to make something nice for someone. Then he reached up and grabbed an orange rope hanging in his cage:D

Hi Linnie Lovers

If you are wondering, the name PsychoChaser, it refers to a Japanese video game that I bought in the mid-eighties.

I have two green split linnies, but I am not 100% sure. They are a bonded pair that I purchased from a very nice lady.

Why? I wanted to breed my budgie but since I am working on handtaming and some tricks with her, I decided against it.

The linnies have had eggs and three of the four eggs have hatched. I have been reading as much as I can for the last month on this forum and other websites.

Ok so Angel has this sound she makes when she is snuggling or getting scritches and sometimes just because...it is kind of like a gravely throat clearing? Not sure how to describe it, at first I thought something was wrong but she does it so often I am thinking it is a conure thing

Update on Mini Macaw "Happy"

I am very pleased with the personality of our new baby.

He/She is a dear soul. I'm still a bit awkward about picking him/her up. He is So HEAVY compared to the Linnies. :yesnod: But he is already trying to step up onto my hand or arm or finger, I need to figure out how best to do it for this baby.

He still takes little naps, and a pretty long one after I feed him. I've been feeding him 4 times a day. The breeder told me he was down to 2 - 3 feedings, but I don't know how, because he isn't eating anything else yet.:mad:
Yesterday I put some RB crumbles on a paper towel on the floor of the cage along with some oat meal, and he did nibble on some of that. But he hasn't a clue of what to do with the dish of mixed veggies or soaked seeds yet. :yikes:

He has climbed up on the perch, and then up on the shelf, and then to the rope already. The first day he couldn't get onto the first perch. I love his little voice so far. He generally is very quiet between feedings! He has started to vocalize a little bit, but you can tell its a baby squawk yet. How many people can say they love the sound of their Macaw's squawk. :giggle: We are working on a few words with him already. Just fooling ourselves probably.

Here is a new photo I took of him yesterday. See his little feathers on his white eye area. I can barely see them in person.
You can see his perch and rope in this shot. She loves her little toy with the links and teddy bears on it. She'll climb up on the perch and take a hold of the chain and just sit there with it in her mouth, like, OK what do I do with it now ?

I'm loving it. :D :lovehearts::lovehearts: I get a kick out of watching for all those "firsts" that a baby goes thru.

Beginnings

As I've been reading, I remember how I got started with my birds. It all began when I was a child. Both of my grandparents had parakeets and I remember how fascinated I was, especially when Dicky laid an egg!

I then took a 40 year break before I again became fascinated. After my youngest son went to college, I often went to a really nice pet store. It was a small shop that loved animals and was run and owned by a lovely lady. I would go in and visit with the few animals she took in from local people. I discovered her parakeets and after several visits took one home. AND I WAS HOOKED. It has been about 7 years and the fascination continues. My second bird was a cockatiel, but after one weekend of sneezing and a runny nose, I discovered that I was allergic to powder. Luckily, the lovely lady let me exchange the 'tiel for a parrotlet.

As I've been reading about linnies and your comments about the many different kinds of birds y'all have I have been thinking about why I wanted a linnie. I have a caique who is the only medium parrot I need. But, the smaller birds just seem so much easier. I love my p'lets, but the linnies are so different. So...I live Iris my new linnie because:
I love to watch her walk. It is so amusing.
I love the way she perches-all bent over like she is ready to take off.
I love the sounds she makes. They are so different.
I love how she hides behind the fabric of her tent when she is afraid.
And to think that I've only had her for 10 days!
How about you?

:shrug: kiwi has something wrong with his eye and i can't actually see anything different from the other one:shrug: he keeps closing his left eye like it is irratating him, most of the day he blinks it alot and closes it:shrug:

i have held him still to look at his eye but i can't see anything in it, on it or around it, it doesn't look sore or anything, it's just clearing not right as he keeps closing it too much!!!

I'm phoning the local vet tomorrow and see what days the speacialist(sp?) is in, i think s/he only comes in twice a week:smash: so i may have to wait a while to get an appointment:waiting:

what do you guys think is wrong with my poor boy?

In fact, the linnie is supposed to be a bird for our daughter, but as she is just 8 years old, I expect to take most of the care for him/her. We do not want to breed him or her, just have it for fun and love. I hope you pardon my language mistakes, as I am not a native speaker. I decided to become a member of this site as I have seen that it is possible to gain a lot of valuable information about linnies, which are quite rare in our country.

I spent several hours with my saw, drill and sandpaper lol. They were so cheap to make, just took some time.

If you have any bamboo lying around, bamboo makes excellent natural beads, when you saw it up it has a natural hole through the middle ;)

Hi guy's it's been a while. I've been doing well to avoid the internet/computer as much as I can. I tell ya though replacing time online with tv is not the way to go! lol only joking.

Okay so the last time I was on here writing about the girls I Had said that they are fighting.

Well. I'm not really sure what happened, but it has stopped in frequency but they still bicker (sp?) like little sisters do. I added tons of perched to the cage and added one more feeding bowl. I put the tents so they face the opposite direction and it seems to be doing the trick!

I've watched Luna and how/when she gets mad, and it is usually because of me. She gets jealous and territorial when I hold sage or sage touches me. So I'm doing everything first with Luna and then Sage. We'll see how that works lol.

OH I ordered a lot of toy making things, I cannot wait for it to get here. I'm sure they are going to love it. I'm hoping it will help Luna play more, she usually just watches sage play... It's funny. Sage is a clown when it comes to playing. She likes to fly back and forth and she hangs from everything! It's so funny to see totally opposite personalities be so lovey at times, but I can see why they "fight". Lolol

I took them to the vet on august 2nd I believe. It was just to meet and introduce ourselves and for a short check up. The vet was very nice! They had budgies there and everything. I'm really happy that I found her. The girls did not like the ride there. I put them in one cage not thinking that they wouldn't get a long.. so lets just say Sage rode on my shoulder there and back LOL. She enjoyed the ride when she was out of the cage. Luna got to come out too. They were very good once separated. Lesson learned there, always use two cages on road trips.
We went through the drive though at Arby's for lunch and the lady who was working got to see sage, it was interesting. And don't worry Sage was safe when the window was down.

Every morning when they get up they like to fly towards my closet. I'm not sure why they choose that place but they like to run under my bed so yesterday I stuffed some pillows and shoe boxes under my bed so they couldn't get in. I don't think they liked that too much :nana::giggle:

I think sage is starting a molt? I'm not sure.. what age does the first molt start? She's got a few pinnies but Luna does well to make sure they don't last long. Sage still enjoys head and neck rubs too.

Today I had them both on each shoulder while picking some stuff up in my room. I think that was the longest they've lasted while I was moving around lol. I was going to try to walk to the bathroom with them on my shoulder, but I decided against it because Sage can fly pretty far and I didn't want to risk a dog or even cat getting her.

Luna is used to the trip to the bathroom with me, I think she enjoys it lol. When she's on my shoulder she stays, it's cute. Sage will stay if I'm sitting. Well I'm just going to leave it as that because I've written a lot.

Sorry It's so much rambling I haven't been here in a while. Also sorry for any typos or forgotten letters, it's almost 5 am! I'm going to sleep now! I've been doing pretty well on sleeping the right times but tonight I got hooked on watching The Big Bang Theory, and couldn't stop. I finished an entire season! :whistle:

p.s. Crystal you jinxed me and my computers :type: LOL My desktop broke down completely, and just the other day my laptop blue screened me. I know it's because of the fan going, it must of gotten too hot. I got a cooling board for it now though and everything has been fine since so ::crosses fingers:::nana::whistle::giggle:

So I watched my friends 8 yr old daughter yesterday and after much coaching on how to handle a bird she did very well and Angel decided they were buddies:D She is such a gentle bird! She was voluntarily burrowing in the blanket, she did that with me tonight while we were watching tv:lovehearts:

P.S.Bella is afraid of Willow because Willow gave her a nasty bite a few weeks back, drew blood and left a scar.:yikes::yikes: So she won't go near her anymore!

I have two identical cages. One for my baby linnie Jaci and one for Jack my baby budgie. The cages are 27"w by 18" deep by 36" high. Jack sleeps at the top of the cage and Jaci sleeps in her hut. They exercise their wings in the middle of the cage and eat and hang out at the bottom. I have rope and natural wood perches. Plastic, wood and chew, toys. I know several of you are wondering why I am MIA - I am ok - just in a lot of pain and not as "chatty" due to that. I still check in once a day :) Hopefully the pain will back off soon. Mostly headaches from sinus infection and meds is what stops me from playing on the forums - hard to focus on the thoughts/words/screen. lol

Chicken is still chicken... hormonal ;) fussy ;)

Her scab is gone from her booboo :) it healed really well.
She played a bit more today - which was nice
She tried to bite me several times - which was NOT nice ;)
We had a good day though, no screaming... minimal fussing. No cuddles or kisses though.

I hope her hormones end soon. I miss my baby. lol

A Question about flying

Hi every one. I hope all of you and your babies are well. I have 2 babies Jack a female budgie who is 9 months old and Jaci my baby girl Linnie who is about 8 weeks. Jack comes out of her cage regularly and speed flies around the room, sits on my hand shoulder and computer:giggle:. I take Jaci out of her cage every day but I just cuddle her. She is a little leg challenged, She does really will climbing around her cage but twice now she has got away from me and flies quite well but then goes down like a rock because she can't land on two legs. Needless to say it scared me. I am afraid to let her go now. Any advice would be appreciated. One quick note. I woke up this morning to her talking, She has picked up all of Jacks words in 3 weeks.:yikes: What a great way to wake up.:D

I was trying my hand at "Food Porn" and came into my daughter's room to show her the first attempt (a red bell pepper flower,with green bell pepper leaves and a blueberry center) I wanted to get a pic.

As I have only had Iris for 6 days, I am still trying to find out what will make her happy! Today, she was really exploring her cage and finally discovered her natural wood, L- shaped perch. She really seems to love it as she can lean on it when she is napping. It has great texture and knotty dimension.

It is so neat when you know that you have made your fid happy! If any of y'all experienced linnie parronts have any special hints for me as to your linnie's favorite things, please share.

Hello everyone my name is Veronika, my bird is Bella Blueberry. I call her Bella, she is sooo cute she likes eating rice and "talking" with Perky my cockatiel from across the house. She is blue and full of personality but she's not friendly all the time. Sometimes, I scratch her on the neck while my mother cleans her cage, she really likes it. I love her sooo much but I wish I could hold her. Her band says she was born in 2003 that makes her about 7 years old!!!! She's been in a pet store most of those years, that is probably why she has a few social issues. Nothing a little TLC can't help. :lovehearts:That being said I finish my intro by telling all of you how lovely and adorable your birdies are.:)

We had a little accident this evening. I had Millie and Nibbie on my shoulders and I was attempting to take their sleep cage apart to clean it so I shut the door part way just as Millie decided she was going in. She squawked loudly so I grabbed her and sat and gave her little head rubs and kisses for about ten minutes. Then Ted came in the livingroom and asked me to hand her over so he gave her little rubs for about another ten minutes while I cleaned the cage. She was fine actually just a little frightened.
We went to visit a neighbour for a while and got back just in time for 'come out of the cage and poop on Nana' time. When it was time to go back into the cage and get covered for the night I got another squawk from Millie and so I grabbed her and gave her more little head rubs and kisses. It then suddenly occurred to me that she just wanted the rubs and kisses. :lol::lovehearts:

I ordered an 2 oz jar of Avi-Culture Avian Specific Probiotic but here's the problem, I have no idea how often to give it to the fids nor do I know whether or not it's needs to be refrigerated after I open it.

Sure hope someone can help. I planned on sprinkling it on their salad. Is that a good idea or not. Right now I sprinkle calcium on twice a week and Featherific every day. Soon they'll be having more sprinkles than salad. :rofl2:

HE'S HERE! And OMG:woohoo2::parrotsmilie: I'm in love already!

He is a BIG Baby. After being used to handling 20 - 30 grams babies, what a shock when I weighed him, almost 150 grams. But he is still very baby like.

I fed him as soon as my husband got home with him. That is I fed him after I cleaned him up. That's why he has wet feathers. My husband tried to feed him when he got him in the car, but the baby was kind of freaked out and the food was all down the front of my husbands shirt and all over the babies face. He sat very quiet and patiently while I cleaned his face with water.

After I fed him he looked sleepy so I covered the cage about 3/4 so he could have private, and semi-dark to take a nap. Well, that lasted about 10 minutes, and then he was up and exploring the perches and toys, etc.

:confused: I have 2 baby linnies that i pulled last thursday, when i went to work last nite they were fine, this morning i went to feed them and one of them leaned to the side almost like he had a kink in his neck. is this normal behavior for a linnie? or should i be worried about an infection

A very thoughtful and kind linnie owner gave our family a fantastic King's cage. A budgie and linnie have been living happily in this cage this year. It is about 6x the size of Luna's current cage - seriously - 32 x 20 x 3.5' or so! Really nice. But I noticed that the bars were slightly wider and I just measured - sure enough, the bars are 5/8". Does this really mean I can't use it? :( It is nicer than anything we could afford and I was so excited to use it to grow our 'flock' over time (not to mention how happy the birds would be to have so much space). It is really fun to see the budgie flying around with all that room. Is there any way to make it work?

When to pull chicks for hand feeding?

Why so loud??

Since moving Crosby to our busy family room from our quiet living room, he often gets Very Loud. I at times have covered his cage to quiet him or my husband said that covering the cage today didn't work and Crosby got moved back to the living room for a little while, where he remains quiet. I'm finding in the morning it is the worst and I have started uncovering his cage a little at a time (a tip I found from Jayde's experience with The Diva chicken).

My question is why is he now squaking? Do linnies squack (spelling?) when happy, stressed, upset? Was he happier in the quiet room? He was A LOT quieter, but I thought he'd be lonely and I enjoy being near him more often in our family room.

What should we do to encourage him to not be so loud?

We still LOVE him like crazy, just want some help interpreting his behaviour.

We were looking at Lorikeets but they are just impossible to find here and breeders are not willing to sell single birds only pairs.:(

So after looking at every type of bird imaginable and reading every piece of information on different birds going, oh and reading all your comments on your other birds (that was the most important bit:giggle:) We have decided to get a conure for our empty cage:)

Now we have got the breed I was just wondering if there is any difference in personality in the different types?? We have been looking at the Jenday's and the GC Conure ( actually all of them:whistle:) but we are not sure if the only difference is the way they look or if it is more to them than that??

New start for Tango

Well as most of you know Tango is the most aggressive linnie on the planet,And loves the sight of blood:yikes:
Well i have now moved him and snowy to a temporary cage,To start some serious training,as ive had enough :mad:

well in the 1st day or 2 Tango came to the side of the cage and took some apple :thumbsup:without trying to get to me.............

But day 3 and O'DEAR Tango is himself again,So befor he got any treats of any kind,i wrapped him in a teatowel and sat him on my lap for 5 mins stroking his head gently and talking to him softly,he didn't like it much....
then returned him to his cage with a platefull of his favourite veg's...

but if i try this twice a day,will this help!
or am i making things worse...........

Any help and advice will be much appreciated....:D

i am on a serious mission to tame him down,And for once be able to put my hand in the cage without him drawing BLOOD!

We got a little tabletop playstand, but Luna is already pretty bored with it, and there isn't much I can do to modify it. I bought vet wrap to make my own out of PVC, but won't have time for a while. Could you provide a link or pic of your favorite stand? I would love to get one that I could roll to different rooms, but I may save that for the one I make. The tabletop ones I've looked at all seem like they'd take up a ton of room...

Luna came to me eating mostly defrosted frozen mixed veggies and pellets. She now eats mostly pellets and nothing (as far as I can tell) but corn. I first tried mixing quinoa in to the mixed veggies. She wouldn't touch any of it. I've tried apples, peanuts, pasta, rice, sprouts - the list goes on and on. The only thing she seems to eat consistently is corn. How can I get her to try things? Does it even matter as long as she is eating her pellets? She's almost 3 months now.

I'm also having trouble with fruit flies, so I leave the fresh food in the cage for shorter periods. I took the food out completely for a few days, but the fruit flies are relentless and just came back with the food. Ick. not sure if that is related to her not trying new things...It doesn't seem to be, but wanted to mention it.

Where is everyone???

Willow was out on top of her cage and Angel was playing in her cage, I was busy downloading stuff onto my computer and before I knew Willow was on Angels cage and they are preening each other through the bars:yikes::yikes:

Should I separate them right away or let them have a little time together? I want them to get along but I also want Angel bonded to me and not Willow. She loves to be with me already but is it to soon to introduce them??

:)Well today was the big day,Mommie's handsome little prince is came home today!!! :D Loki had a very busy day: played with his toys( favorite toys so far is his slingy..and yes Ineke and Nana I will try to find some for you:)and his little ducky),gave his first bath from me, tolerated really well too, ate a piece of a french fry(and took one from my plate too:giggle:tiny bit of cookie,bit of salad and of course lots of pellets!! Basically he as an amazing appietite:thumbsup:!!! Had lots of cuddles from my Nana&Pops(was biting again even me too:() Got to hear him talk even while in the car..too funny!! And best of all had first Mommie and me time and it went better then I thought:thumbsup:!! Now he is asleep for the night, went to check on him a couple of time. I think my motherly instincts as offically kicked in!!:rofl2: don't worry pics:photo: are hopefully on the way soon!!

Whatever the opposite of a golden touch is, I seem to have one. I've two linnies, Boomer (aged just under two years) and Bernie (acquired last November). Both of them are sweet, enjoy sitting on my shoulder or arm while I do computer stuff, and both of them have phrases they repeat. Except this weekend, Bernie suddenly turned socipathic.

Saturday afternoon I took the boys out to The Menagerie, a local pet shop, to have their claws trimmed (both of them were getting too long). The shop's back room is their bird section, they usually have a bunch of loud birds, and that day it was just a scream fest. I thought that my boys got through it fine, but as soon as we got home....

About an hour after we got home, Bernie began biting me. He stopped stepping up onto my finger, and became very aggressive whenever I got near his cage. There was one last bout of him being the obedient bird I'd known, and now whenever I enter the room he gets chirpy and if I approach his cage he lunges, trying to bite. I can see that he's panting heavily and his eyes begin to close over whenever I'm close.

I haven't had him out of his cage since Sunday, because I'm flat-out uncertain of what he'll do with free reign. He also very recently became fully flighted - it was probably Wednesday or Thursday that he realized he can fly all the way around the room and gain altitude the whole time. He was using this to his advantage the last time I tried letting him out of his cage - flying to land on my head for a moment, then flying back to his cage to be aggressive again.

I took him to the vet for a general physical on Sunday, and the vet couldn't see anything wrong. He still has his appetite, he still drinks water, and he's still vocalizing and scooting around his cage.

So my green bird now hates me. :( I'd like to regain his trust but don't know how. The vet suggested to begin towel training, so I tried this for a bit when we got home. My goal was to wrap him up and hold him for about fifteen minutes. Well, I have trouble gathering him in a towel, and the one time I was able to finally catch him and wrap him up successfully, he was squirming the whole time and began panting. I was worried I might be either crushing him or overheating him (the joys of a Toronto summer), and the moment I tried to relax my grip he squirmed out of it so he could bite me. A lot. Sharply.

On top of this, the two birds are in separate cages right next to each other. If I move Bernie's cage (I'd thought I might acclimate him to my presence by just putting his cage next to my desk as I work) the two birds begin contact calling, and by "calling" I mean "screaming". They do have line of sight to each other, so it's not like they can't figure out where each other are. I had a plan to have Bernie's cage on my nightstand as I sleep but this seems to put the kibosh on it.

So, summary questions.

1. How do I do towel training with a bird this aggressive? I know that you acclimate a bird to your hand by putting your hand in their cage and not letting them chase you out. Would it help if I did this with a towel-wrapped hand first, and then I switched to my bare hand after he was more used to it?

2. Part of me suspects that the new aggression all of a sudden is at least in part a result of his realizing that he's fully flighted and doesn't need me anymore to get around. This implies that if I clip his wings, he'll have a period of time where he realizes that he's no longer superior to me and needs my help to get around. Does anyone have any success stories about this? More importantly, does anyone have any horror stories?

3. I'm taking him to the vet Thursday for a full exam (blood work, etc.) just to make sure none of this is the result of a health problem. (The eye-closing when I'm nearby worries me a little. If he hates me this much, he should want desperately to not take his attention off me....) What can I do in the meantime? Ignoring him feels like it's reinforcing his cage dominant behaviour, but I also don't want to stress him out so much that he just pops. Do I just give him space until I have a real plan?

4. Anything I should do with Boomer, besides try to play with him as usual, talk with him, make sure he doesn't start displaying the same behaviour?

SO! Goober really dislikes my Mom, which is what I think the root of this is, among many different things but... Goober bit my hand really hard twice and put a whole in my lip this morning... I'll explain:

My sister got Goober out of the cage, which she rarely does and brought her upstairs to see me. Goober comes upstairs a lot, but usually only to my room. Today, Amanda brought Goober to my parent's room where I was trying on one of my Mom's swimsuits (so I was in my Mom's clothes in my Mom's room). She handed Goober to me and she latched on to my hand and wouldn't let go until I pried her off and chicken-choked her. I then let her recover for a second on the floor and offered my arm, talking quietly and calmly to her "it's ok, sweetie, it's me. it's your Mommy, it's ok" and she bit me again so I tossed her on to my Mom's bed so she wouldn't get hurt and couldn't get to anyone while I got a towel to restrain her... after I got the towel, I sat about 2 feet away from her, talking to her, trying to calm her down and keep myself calm when she JUMPED off the bed and latched on to my lip, biting through it and not letting go until, again, I pried her off my face... Needless to say, she got thrown on the bed again while I cried and cried... It was bleeding so bad.. :(

I waited until I calmed down again and then toweled her so she couldn't see me at all and took her down to her cage, put her in it, and closed the door. I went immediately upstairs and changed clothes and waited 10-15 minutes before I came down again and she acted completely normal with me, through the cage bars, because I didn't want to get her out yet... better for us both that she stays in her cage a few hours to calm down and for us BOTH to recover...

I went to the zoo with my sister and her friend (had a great time) once I got the bleeding n all under control. It's really not that bad - a nice clean puncture through and it's already closed up after I put some peroxide on it and some neosporin. We were at the zoo for a good 5 hours and, when I got home, I showered and changed clothes again and got her out of the cage - she kept nuzzling me and begged to be on my shoulder, which I allowed, and she made kissy noises and kissed my bottom lip, like she KNEW I was hurt on my top lip... so we're good, now, it seems.

I think the root of it all was there was too much going on at once - someone who she likes, but isn't quite used to, got her out of the cage, took her to an unfamiliar room, and I was in a bikini (which she's NEVER seen me wear, only my Mom) so... I really don't blame her for it at all. She's also turning 2 in, gosh, 11 days so she's due to be hormonal and Macaws are known for getting possessive and aggressive during this phase... She's just one lucky little @#$$^% that I know and understand all this crap and that it's ME she bit, not my Mom, or she would be out of this house...

MY lip looks 100% better now than it did before, but here's an idea of the damage her beak can do when she's biting for REAL, not a warning bite, not a test bite.

The moral of the story? Big birds are NOT for everyone - you HAVE to expect something like this to happen with owning a big bird, no matter how close a bond you have. Macaws are moody to begin with and they have a VERY strong beak. I'm very lucky she just bit a hole in my lip and she didn't tear a chunk off my lip. Heck, if I had just pulled her off me like most people would, I probably would be missing a piece of my lip. Because I was willing to take another bite to my hand, I stuck my thumb in her mouth and pried her mouth open to get her off my lip rather than try and tear her away.

Just let this serve as a warning to all potential big bird owners - I don't want to scare you away from them but you have to take this sort of thing into consideration. It's in NO way her fault and she didn't do it because she hates or dislikes me - she was stressed and nervous and didn't know how else to express herself.

I just got a linnie on Sunday. If the tail feathers are indicative of sex, then she looks to be a female. It doesn't really matter, so I am going to call her Iris as she is blue.

I have 3 grown sons, 3 yorkies, a caique, 2 parrotlets, and now Iris. I am also a school teacher living in Ohio.

I recently went on vacation to visit my sons and I let my 3rd parrotlet and my hampster with my cousin. She is handicapped due to a stroke and when I returned, she asked if she could keep Quill and Nibbles. She fell in love with them and they are so much company, so... I went to a bird fair on Sunday and came home with Iris. She is going to become a member of my 4th grade language arts class. I still have to replace the dwarf hampster.

Yankee is the quietest caique that I have ever heard of. He is 4 and a real joy, although he only likes me. Twinkie, my yellow p'let loves to chatter, but hates to come out of his cage. Bluebella, blue p'let, has laid 2 clutches of eggs this Spring, but finally stopped while I was away. She is very social and loving. Iris was handfed but not handled much lately, so we are still getting acquainted!

I have belonged the the "Up At Six" forum for several years, but it has become inactive.

I have been reading posts about linnies and I had done quite a bit of research on them before I bought Iris, but I look forward to learning much more.

Hello,

My first question to all of you after reading your posts on how it's hard to just have one Linnie is if I were to eventually have two Linnies, would it be better to have two females, two males or a male and female? Is there dominant aggression amongst same sex birds? Also, would it be best to bring home both Linnies at the same time or could I have one established Linnie and then bring home another baby?

i knew the time would come...

but little penny, the last of rubies litter, and the puppy id grown a little too attatched to went to her new home today.

i tried my darndest to distance myself knowing that all these puppies would go to their new homes...but there was something about little penny, i wanted to keep her but it would have been a great disservice to the little lady given all the dogs in this house...

the good news is the young couple that took her are amazing women, shes going to be spoilt rotten and given alot of love, she'll have a little chihuahua to play with too...

ill miss the little peanut though!

Sonny Bunz Party

On Saturday, 8-14-10, Bob, Peanut and I went to a linnie birthday party. My good friend Liz had a birthday party party for her girl Sonny Bunz who turned 8!! Sonny is a female lutino that is blind. We had a really nice time. We were all expected to wear yellow in honor of Sonny. We played some games, ate cake and then opened Sonny's presents. Peanut enjoyed eating some b-day cake. Liz made the cake in the shape of Sonny. The cake looked fantastic. You can see Sonny Bunz by the cake in the picture!!

...when you consider how much power some birds have, and they choose not to use it on us! This is what Fred did to a Maple play stand in about ten minutes!!! The sound of wood splintering was "unnerving"....

Small Parrot: My New baby Green Cheek

So everyone this weekend I brought home a Normal Green Cheek Conure, she is about 10 weeks old and her name is Angel...she is not sexed yet but her name will be Angel regardless :)

She is super sweet and it took all of 10 minutes for her to come out of the shipping crate to hop on me. She already loves kisses and scritches:lovehearts::lovehearts:

Yes, I'm a newbie to the forum and hoping to be a newbie Linnie owner soon. My family and I have been researching all types of birds as we would like to welcome one into our family soon. From what I have read so far the Linnie sounds like it would be the perfect pet bird for us.
I've joined the forum in hopes of learning more about the Lineolated Parakeet before adding one to our family and I would really like to find a reputable breeder when the time comes. I found your sight and thought that this would be the perfect place to do both. Thank you for having me and I can't wait to start digging into the posts.

This morning when we were doing our normal shower routine someone tried to peep out of her cage (( from bottom door )) - I gently put her back though and we had our morning........

Then she was happy all day until I cleaned her cage and changed her boing ;) She was mad at me for touching her BLUE DUCK ;) Then she wouldn't let me steal kisses.

BUT when the door was open to change her water she came down to the bottom door again (( what she does is stand right in the middle of the doorway )) I don't know if she wants OUT OUT or to be closer to me or what.... but there was a pot of hot water on the stove so I couldn't' let her come out. I had her step up (( which she is getting more and more reliable with - with our :help: command. When she stepped up I do what I always do and raise her to one of her perches to get off of me and onto. USUALLY that takes about 4 seconds? that is the longest she has sat on my hand...........

TONIGHT I stepped her up to put her on her perch? and she decided to STAY ON MY HAND. VOLUNTARILY. for a good MINUTE. She sat there on my finger and I gently stroked her beak with my thumb. She preened my thumb a bit.

I AM SO PROUD OF HER!

I am betting I will get bedtime kisses when I put her to bed in 20 minutes too! :thumbsup::lovehearts::lovehearts::lovehearts::lovehearts:

I currently have assorted finches and parakeets, turquoisine grass parakeets, a pair of indian ringnecks and am working on plans for some small aviaries. I am interested in adding some linnies and some bourke parakeets to my collection. They are housed in flight cages in my screen porch but I am converting it to larger custom built flights. I am researching the linnies want to know as much as possible about who they can share space with.

I am looking forward to getting my first pair and learning more about them.

My rosellas always enjoy their time on my patio. I put them in at night. I don't have to chase them at all because they are all stick trained. Ruby and Rubin will be breeders. Only Regal is hand tamed and will sit on my shoulder and preen my hair. They are all so lovely.

Poor Ruby is a mess right now moulting. But when she's done she'll be as pretty as Regal. :)

I was video taping Willow & Shelby Rayne eating off their new kabob thingy when the camera flew out of my hands and landed smack damn perfect on the lens:yikes: Todally destroyed!:yikes::cry:

This time, I put 1 blueberry-1/4 green grape-1/4 bing cherry-slice green pepper-1/4 cherry-1/4 grape-blueberry. The first time they had a grape and a cherry, they didn't bother with it after the first taste, but they went to town on it this time! This is the first time they had so much fruit at one time:yikes: But, they rarely get fruit, so.....

so i was asked about the pack so i figured i should give it to you lol.

im owned by a pair of chinese crested, and temporarily their 10 (almost 11) week old puppy. Penny the puppy is Hopefully going home on monday, all her siblings left 2 weeks ago but her arranged mommy had a huge family emergency so weve been searching for a good home for her, and i think ive found it...we'll see on monday.
so i wont go too much into her...

but i will introduce you to the rest of the family.
well go oldest to youngest...

i live with my parents currently so i consider all the pets mine too...

first theres charlie, chalire is an am x eng cocker spaniel, he was a puppymill "rescue" (we bought him on sale for $199 cause he was almost 5 months old and they were just going to ship him back :mad:)
he has been one of the best dogs ever, hes such a big mush, the other dogs are sometimes so mean to him, but he lets them take his toys and eat out of his bowl and generally push him around.

then theres puss puss
puss puss (otherwise known as Pippin) hes a brown tabby and a strange little beast.
we found him at 4 weeks old in a plantpot, I raised him tended him socilized him...and guess what...he hates me lol. yup gratitude for ya! hes cute though!

Vixie is a long haired chihuahua, she was originally my dog but after spending years with my mother it quickly became apparent that she, along with dodger will never be happy without my mum.
i still love her dearly though.

Dodger is Vixies hubby, hes another long haired chihuahua and just an absolute baby, hes turned into my dads dog, they have a special bond and dad loves to hold him like a baby and spoil him rotten. hes quite the silly little man though.

then theres Rosie. rosie is 100% my mums dog, they are unseperable. she thinks shes queen bee.

What size bands for Bourkes?

I am getting ready to place my order for next years canary bands and I would like to get a few bands for my Bourkes too as one pair I feel will raise babies and the other may raise some as well.
I am not 100% sure what size to order!! I am thinking they need the size listed for English Budgies, is that the right size? Or do they need the next size up for lovebirds and cockatiels?

Here are my babies settling in to their new cage!
I had hopes to pair Tansy of with Jasper for some nice babies but the birds had other ideas. Jasper paired up with Violet which broke up the supposed mated pair I purchased!! Dutch (the male to the so called pair) doesn't seem to like any of the other birds at all which seems kinda strange to me. I would not be at all unhappy if Dutch would pair up with Tansy as Tansy is out of two Rubino parents and Dutch is out of a Rosie and a Latino!! I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens. So far Jasper and Violet seem quite happy, are always together and have even started feeding each other.
Oh, by the way. In the photos, the Rainbow is Jasper, The Rosie is Dutch, the Normal is Violet and the Rubino is Tansy.
I really like them, and I LOVE the little noises they make!!!:lovehearts:

New Birdie Diggs!!!

I got my cage put together last weekend but with the passing of a friend of mine last week I just now found time to get on the computer. The cage is WAY nicer than I had anticipated and the birds LOVE it!! They have enough room they can fly circles around the open part of the top and I enjoy watching them "helicopter" from the bottom straight up to the very top and land on a feeder!:lol: I don't have any toys or anything added yet and I have an idea for a hanging bath bowl that I can hang from the top by small chains and then remove when they get done. It will all take time I'm sure but I have the basics so far. The cage also has two breeder box doors in the top side panels for next spring!:thumbsup: Speaking of such, the only problem that I have experience so far with these little birds is that the two birds who were suppose to be a mated pair, were not and the rainbow (Jasper) has paired up with my normal female(Violet). Nothing wrong with that except Jasper is getting a little aggressive toward the other birds now that I have them in this larger flight. The pair have been feeding each other and I think they are wanting to nest. I really didn't plan on any one nesting till spring!:whistle:

i was sat next to his cage checking my email and he was chirping away so i opend his cage as i do every day now just so he knows he can come and go as he pleases when the doors open and just because the door is open it doesnt mean im going to be sticking my hand in...

well i look over and hes on the door which swings open...i start talking to him and he edges closer and closer and then he falls...so i pick him up by cupping him and he didnt bite or nip or anything! then i opend my hands expecting him to jump back in his cage and instead he clambered onto my shoulder and is right now nuzzled in my hair at the nape of my neck!
all on his own!

Taylor was in her room rather quietly playing

I looked in and there Leon and her were playing

she would place him on the dresser
and encourage him to jump to the bed
then she would record his landing with a piece of square paper she taped to the bed

it was such fun watching
he actually would stand on the dresser
wait for Taylor to call him
and then he'd flap his wings
call out to her
and then jump
I could tell he was getting tired so I peeked in letting them both know I was watching

loki is certinaly a little character, hes still not playing yet and pretty inactive in his cage :( but hes eating fine and twirps away all day, he finds the cat incredibly interesting particularly when shes stupid enough to put her paws on the cage, it readily ends in her squeeliung as he bited her toes...

as i said...serves her right and shes quickly learning that the cage is not a good place to chill.

i wish he was just alittle more playfull so i know hes comfortable...

BUT...

today...

he let me scritch his head!!!!!:hurray:

i was moving a toy that was in a bad position and he didnt move away from my hand so i gently reached out a finger and he put his head down! he likes his cheeks scritched too.

i made the mistake of thinking to move forward a bit and put my finger infront of him and asked him to step up...it was promptly answered with a good nip then he put his head back down and nudged closer to my finger...
hes such a little brat :rofl2:

but thats progress right?! i mean he would move away form my finger before and now he stands there and actually puts his head down for neck scritches...

now...if only hed play!

I'm very pleased with the progress that Freddie and I have made. I can step him up, scratch his head, tickle his toes, and he now gives me kisses. I lean in, say "Give me kisses"...and he touches his beak to my top lip, and feels me with his tongue. Please don't scold me...I know it's probably not a good idea, and I may end up with a split lip, but I just couldn't resist. I only do that when he's in a very mellow mood! I also offer him the top of my head, and he loves to preen me. Yay!!!:hurray:

Question re: out of cage time

I was wondering when you let your linnies out of their cage, do you sit near the cage or is the cage in a room that you are in frequently?

We have Crosby in the living room, we often sit with him quietly, but I haven't been letting him out as often as I like because I can't sit with him all the time. Do others leave their Linnie out while they are in other areas of the home?

Than when I do let him out, it's of course when one of the kids need something or someone has a tantrum, ect. And I end up trying to usher him back in the cage so I can tend to fussy kids.

I'm considering buying a bigger cage with a play top and than could maybe put the cage in the family room. Or am I just being paranoid and I should let him out more frequently while I'm in other areas of the home?

Crosby's wings are clipped, however he has fallen off his cage and has no way of getting back up.

Others thoughts are appreciated.

Bernard Gets A Spray Shower

Ah but before you give him your applause you must hear the whole story
I was spraying the flock and Bernard was running back and forth like a scared chicken as usual. I told Joe that sometimes I feel like I am in a duck shooting gallery at a carnival with a water gun:lol:
I gave up and went to Willy who I knew loves his spray shower.
Then I moved back to Bernard who went running...again
All of the sudden there was a loud WHERP from Willy and Bernard froze:eek: He planted his feet on the bottom the cage with his eyes shut tight. I misted him gently. Then another WHHERP from Willy's cage and Bernard spread his wings still clinging to the bottom of the cage with his eyes squinted. Poor Bernard looked like he was in a hose down at a police station.
I figured he had enough and moved back to Willy who backed off. I thought Huh? Now what?
I moved and trickled just a few more drops on Bernards tail. He shook himself and climbed up.
At last Willy believed his buddy to be thoroughly clean and respectable. He climbed to the middle perch, hung over, wings spread, tail in the air and gave a wink that said "ok mom Now its my turn!"

so we were success full.
after going to look at birds a breeder had left, turns out she only has one couple in her living room in a large cage, all clean and neat, and healthy happy birds.
she had two green ones left 5 months old.
i picked the darker shade of green as that one had the most black on its tail, hoping it will be a boy, or at least a good friend for ocean.
since the woman was really nice, and the way she kept her birds outstanding i decided to put him in the other half of the flight cage next to ocean.
i took a pic of him, and i think he is very handsome, but am stuck for names, any suggestions?

I've been talking to a young lady who is trying to find a forever home for her Fiery-shouldered Conure
she was in the process of another family adopting him
but they have not called her back
and she enjoyed our telephone conversation so called tonight to let me know that she is will to let us be his forever family

I've been reading
he comes with his cage
toys and food
he's on seed
but was on pellet before and she said he loves his fresh food
so what's one more to cook for

the only issue is our home is so small
hubby just rolled his eyes
I'm going to debate it over night
and see what tomorrow brings

Gifts

A super huge Thank you to Sophia for sending me such lovely gifts from her recent trip to Turkey and Yemen.

The first picture is a trivet from Turkey. It is a hand painted ceramic piece with a tulip design. Sophia says the tulip is widely used in Turkey as cups, plates and decorations.

The necklace and earring set it from Yemen. It is silver with coral beads on the necklace. Apparently, there is still a Jewish presence there and the hanging silver pieces on the necklace are reflective of the silver work done by the Jews.

I am astounded by her generosity and I thought it would be nice to share it with all of you. Especially since this is where we've all met!!

cess?jayde? anyone? i have computer problem and i have absolute no idea:confused: and not touching nothing untill someone can advise i'm just worried now that i have lost personnal data on the computer, well it's actually hubby's pc but it has lot of my things on too:(

it shut down and then come up with a message that there is missing or corupt file

\system32\hal.dll. and i can't get onto safe mode or anything, please help me:waiting:

You know it has been a while since I updated on the morning situation... aka the screaming.

Keep in mind this is NOT about her hormone issues - but her usual WAKEUP grumpies that she has had from day one. ;) She still has her hormonal issues.

Anyway - if you recall when my baby came to me in May - she had a LOT of screaming issues. I would wake her at 8 and only uncover the FRONT of her cage - give her breaky and shower and then leave the cover on till 11 am - at which point it was safe to remove it... tho she often still fussed when it came off...... at least she wasn't full on screaming.

WELL in the last few weeks (3?) we have really refined her behavior/morning grumpies/our bonding routine.

I still wake up at 8... and get her breaky and say good morning. I talk to her non stop in a happy chirpy voice. I give her the morning shower and while she still hates it we do a 5 peas shower. This is where I hold a pea and as she eats it I spray her. When she is done I pick up another pea, hold it and she eats as I spray her. It is not "ideal" but it works for us. She happily eats her beloved peas and I get to give her a misting enough to help with the pinnies.

I then talk to her as I get MY breaky and she doesn't scream at all (big accomplishment ). I come back in and sit down and talk to her as I eat, read my morning news. She does great and is happy.

I am now able to fully ncover her by 9 - 9:15 am. She does fuss for 10 minutes when I fully uncover her but over all she is a perfect angel :)

So we have cut the "quiet time" down to an hour or less!

After I uncover her I give her some peas (( I feed them to her one by one )) this is our new bonding routine. She loves it and I love it.... I hold the peas as she eats them and then give her new ones when she is done. She often will give me a quick preen as well during this time.

Our mornings are peaceful and happy. Full of talk, chatter and encouragement.

She still has hormone issues - which we deal with each day, but I think they may be on the way out... I hope so :) would be much better to be 1 month than 6 ;)

i am familar with the genetics of the ino and splits but i'm not sure about the 1st and 2nd dark factors, can someone please explain them to me.
Also what pairing would i need for a mauve baby

More babysteps!

Well I was up early this morning (I am in chemotherapy which really zaps me so I normally get up around 9-ish) so I was the one to 'wake up' Jelllybean this morning. She was so excited and seemed to want to come right out. So instead of waiting for her I offered my finger and asked her to 'step up.' Instead of cringing away from my finger she came right up, I didn't even have to touch her underbelly with my finger! So we celebrated with a piece of yummy fresh banana.

One thing I was wondering, seen a lot of ads lately for baby linnes 'already starting to talk.' Jelly was hatched on June 1st, occasionally I hear her making odd 'speak attempt' sounds but I'm not sure if she is trying or not. Needless to say if all she ever does is make her cute cheepy noises that is fine with me, but all 3 of us here would love to have her say a few words. We've been saying a lot of hi, hello, I love you to her...not sure if we are doing it wrong, I do it in both the high pitched baby voice and then also my normal voice.

I showed my hubby the latest Frederico vid, the poor guy didn't realize Freddie wasn't a linnie and got all excited thinking Jelly would talk like that! I felt awful letting him down (but files that comment away for the day when MBS hits hard).

after scooters sad passing ocean has now been alone for over two weeks.
the first two days she was oddly quiet, considering she is the one with a big beak. then she started contact calling, that was helped along with loads of extra time out and attention.
we have now nick named her bullterrier, as she is getting frustrated now, and bites real hard and holds on. she does this with intend to hurt as she always goes for the soft parts of the hand.
she has always been a bossy little snapping turtle, but this is beyond her usual nipping when not getting her way.
she has now started hight pitched contact screaming, and it is driving me nuts. luckily the hubby and kids are away on holidays, or i am sure he would have made parakeet broth out of her by now.
since i havent seen any adverts for tame linnies i am now at the point to go to a big specialised bird breeder who has his own shop for bird supplies also, and have a look around.
its only an hours drive away, so not too bad if i dont like the way the birds are kept, even though i have heard good things about his place.

keep your fingers crossed for ocean that she will get a mate, and settle down to her usual nippy nature, all happy and content.

new cage thoughts?

so today i noticed my old kings cage after giving itself a good many years of service before me has started to give up the fight for life...

add to that there is a possibility of adding a second bird to my ever expanding little family as my friend has a friend with an accidental clutch of parrolet babies...:lovehearts:

given all that combined with living in a 500sqft space im looking for a space saving option that can house Loki Bird and parrolet in the same unit with no risk of unsupervised contact (due to the p-lets tendency to be rather...feisty...)

it looks pretty good, a little smaller overall than loki is in right now but i like that its longer rather than taller and that might get more use, and the price is deacent too.

i dont like the fact that it has those annoying lift up sliding doors, BUT im also rather crafty and armed with a pair of wire cutters, a metal file, and some cable ties im pretty sure i could contrive some way of turning them into drop down or swing out doors

30 x 18 x 18 from what im reading seems to be the generally accepted "minimum" for a linnie and about the same for a p-let and hopefully loki bird will come round more and be able to spend lots of out of the cage time (as well as p-let)

my other "option" is to go all out and get a HQ double stakced flight cage, which i know are the caddies of the p-let world lol...but im not sure i can justify spending $250 + shipping on a cage for these little monkies, especially considering ill have to redecorate the cages and spend money on toy supplies, manzanita and sand blasted grape vine...

so what do you think...
would the linkage cages be adequate housing for my little loki bird?
